Wolfgang Cramer’s philosophy is among the most original and important achievements in twentieth-century German philosophy. Based on a critique of Kant’s transcendental philosophy, Cramer developed a theory of the absolute that builds on his theory of concrete subjectivity and, methodologically, with the help of basic apagogic argumentation, makes an apodictic foundational claim.

Cramer’s approach brings an interesting resource to the recent God-world-debate, not just because of the profundity of his methodological reflection, but also for systematic reasons. Since the character of the absolute as the principle of determinacy is conceived as a complex unity, this principle enables one to account for both the freedom to create the contingent as well as the general relatedness to the contingent as structural characteristics of the absolute.

Keywords: Wolfgang Cramer, theory of the absolute, concrete subjectivity, principle of determinacy, relationship of the absolute and the contingent
