Hermann-Josef Sieben SJ: Papst und Konzil im ersten Jahrtausend: Eigenständige Entwicklung und wechselseitiges Verhältnis

In welchem Verhältnis stehen die beiden zentralen Institutionen der Kirche, das Papsttum und die Konzilien, zueinander? Wir wollen hierzu nicht das derzeitige Kirchenrecht, sondern die Geschichte beider Institutionen befragen. In einem ersten Schritt befassen wir uns mit der (autonomen) Entwicklung beider Institutionen, in einem zweiten mit ihrem wechselseitigen Verhältnis. Dabei unterscheiden wir zwischen ihrer faktischen Beziehung zueinander und der in Texten verschiedener Natur explizit zum Ausdruck kommenden. Wir beschränken unsere Untersuchung zwar auf das erste Jahrtausend, deuten zum Schluss aber an, wie sich das Konfliktpotenzial des ersten Millenniums auf die Folgezeit auswirkt.

What is the relationship to each other of the two central institutions of the Church, the papacy and the councils? In order to answer this question, we do not look at canaon law, but at the history of the two institutions. We deal, in a first step, with the (autonomous) development of both institutions, and then, in a second step, with their reciprocal relationship. Here we distinguish between their factual relationship to each other and their relationship as it is explicitly described in different texts. Although we limit our inquiry to the first millennium, we do indicate in conclusion how the conflict potential of that first millennium gets realized in subsequent times.
