Harald Schöndorf SJ: Im Anfang war das Wort. Philosophische Überlegungen

Wenn der Anfang von niemandem erlebt wurde, wie dies beim Anfang der Welt oder des Lebens der Fall ist, so ist dieser Anfang nur erschlossen und darum nur im Wort gegenwärtig. Der scheinbar rein materielle und darum ungeistige Anfang ist nur im Wort da. Überhaupt gibt es Wissenschaft nur im Wort. Griechische Philosophen sprachen davon, dass Geist und Sein dasselbe sind. Also kann die Materie nicht in absolutem Gegensatz zum Geist stehen.

Das Wort steht für alles und jedes. Im Gegensatz zum Geist ist es etwas Empirisches, fleischgewordener Geist und ursprünglicher als der Satz. Das Wort verbindet Körper und Geist; es ist die empirische Widerlegung des Materialismus. In der Konzeption von Aristoteles ist die Form eine Art von Bindeglied zwischen der Materie und dem Geist. Die Materie ermöglicht den Geist, d. h. den Menschen. Andererseits benötigt der Geist die Materie für sein Wirken. Das Wort ist das gedrängteste Symbol für die Beziehung von Materie und Geist. Es ist der eigentliche Bereich und der Anfang der Philosophie, zu dem diese immer wieder von neuem zurückkehren muss.

If a beginning has not been experienced, as is the case with the origin of the cosmos and the origin of life, such a beginning is known only by the way of reasoning and thus is only present in words. The origins of matter and life seem to be entirely without spirit. However they can only be present through words. Science exists only through words. Some Greek philosophers claimed an identity of subject and object and all scientists are convinced that matter can be known. Therefore matter cannot be absolutely opposed to spirit.

Words stand for everything. In contrast to spirit, words are empirical, i.e. incarnate spirits. Words unite body and spirit and are the empirical refutation of materialism. In Aristotle's conception, form is a sort of link between matter and spirit. Matter makes spirit possible, makes human beings possible; spirit needs matter to act. Words are the most concise symbol for unity of matter and spirit. Words are the original realm and beginning of philosophy to which philosophers must always return anew.
