Contemporary Muslim theologian Mouhanad Khorchide has put forward the thesis that mercy is an essentially actual attribute of God. In this paper, this thesis is first carefully analyzed and then examined for its logical consistence and coherence by clarifying the concepts of „God“ and „mer-cy“. It can be shown that Khorchide’s thesis is logically inconsistent: It is logically impossible for God to be essentially actually merciful. The same is true of Khorchide’s more recent thesis that freedom is an essentially actual attribute of God. In the last section, possible ways for a further development of Khorchide’s theology are shown which avoid these problems.
