Postgradual
Studies at the Institute of Pastoral Psychology and Spirituality
The Institute of Pastoral Psychology and Spirituality is the only
institution within a German-speaking Faculty of Catholic Theology which
offers advanced vocational training as postgradual studies in pastoral
psychology. The institute stands for
- practical
education focusing
mystagogy
and deacony in a world of cultural
pluralism. This conception gives a specific mystagogic quality to
spirituality. At the same time Pastoral Psychology is not exclusively
fixed to the nevertheless central “face to face”
relationship. These
relations will be widened on deaconal ways. This conception provides an
incentive for mystagogic as well as deaconal processes in a world of
cultural pluralism;
- networking
between science and practice in communities and schools, counselling
and psychotherapy on behalf of church, in deacony of church,
international caritas and international work of solidarity;
- interdisciplinarity:
Every discipline is living in a context of different sciences. Pastoral
Psychology is in dialogue especially with theology and psychology.
Positioning the discipline both outwards – in relation to
neighbour
disciplines – and inwards – in favour of a
systematic development – is
vital. Therefore specific demands of teaching and needs of research
emerge. They may also promote theoretical conceptions as well as the
development of criteria of interdisciplinary work.
Postgradual studies stand open for women and men, laypersons, people in
religious communities, deacons and priests from any country who want to
acquire pastoral and psychological competences and to expand their
abilities in practice and theory.
Theologians can graduate their studies at the Institute of Pastoral
Psychology and Spirituality leading to the licentiate (Lic. theol.) or
to the doctorate (Dr. theol.). Alumni of other disciplines who enrole
as guest students can also acquire further competences and certificates
of these qualifications.
Postgradual studies leading to the licentiate
last for two years (four
semesters). The studies can also be configured over a longer period, so
pursuing a degree while working is possible. It is necessary to perform
eight records of studies. For postgradual studies in Pastoral
Psychology and Spirituality they include:
- at
least one
record from the courses
offered “deacony and mystagogy in practice and
theory”,
- at
least one
record from the courses
offered „guiding with responsibility“,
„Bibliodrama in the
communication of faith“, „Theme-Centered
Interaction” (TCI) and / or
from courses related to practice, for example pastoral care within
school life,
- at least one
record from the seminar
offered „development of theory within practical theology as
an
interdisciplinary process“ and / or „qualitative
and quantitative
methods of empirical research within practical theology”,
- at least two
records from the offerings
beyond practical theology,
- at least one
record from religious
sociology, religious psychology, religious pedagogics, human or social
sciences, and
- one more record:
an appropriate
practical qualification (for example person-centered work or support in
spiritual growth) or a practical course at least for those students who
have not yet been experienced in a practical field of Pastoral
Psychology (communities and schools, counselling and psychotherapy on
behalf of church, deacony of church, institutional caritas and
international solidarity work). This practical training lasts one
semester, must be accompanied by supervision (face to face or in a
group) and ends up in a report.
Postgradual studies leading to the doctorate
contain five records of
studies. The offerings presented above are available. The choice must
include
- at
least one
record from the seminar
offered „development of theory within practical theology as
an
interdisciplinary process“ and / or „qualitative
and quantitative
methods of empirical research within practical theology”, and
- at
least two
records from the offerings
at Sankt Georgen Graduate School beyond practical theology.
For further details see the conditions for the licenciate
and the doctorate
(German only).
