The International Society for the Study of
Medieval Theology (Internationale Gesellschaft für Theologische
Mediävistik e.V.) was established on 20 April 2002 in Frankfurt am
Main/Germany. It has grown out of the Arbeitskreis Theologische
Mediävistik, a Working group for Medieval Theology existing
since 1997. The Society currently counts around 160 members from
more than 20 countries worldwide.
The aim of the Society
is to promote the exchange among scholars in the field of
medieval theology for the benefit of both research and teaching. The
Society represents the discipline at public, ecclesiastical and
other bodies concerned with the organisation of scholarship. It
cooperates with other research institutions, societies and
associations enganged with research on the Middle Ages. It hopes to
promote the cooperation of researchers within its own discipline and
its parts, namely Church History, History of Theology (especially
History of Exegesis, History of Spirituality, History of Liturgy,
History of Canon Law and Sermon Studies) and with other related
disciplines, especially Medieval History, Auxiliary Sciences,
History of Philosophy, Art History, History of Music and History of
Languages and Literature.
The Society organizes an annual meeting and
cooperates with its members in the hosting and organization of
further congresses and publications. The Yearbook Archa Verbi
and a series of Subsidia, published by Aschendorff-Verlag,
have been founded in order to promote the discipline and research in
all branches of the Study of Medieval Theology.
The current President of the Society is Prof. Dr.
Volker Leppin (Tübingen). The other board members are currently Dr.
Ursula Vones-Liebenstein (Köln/Frankfurt a. M.) as treasurer, Prof.
Dr. Riccardo Quinto (Padua) as publication manager und Dr. Pavel
Blažek (Prague) as secretary.
